Anyone can learn about wine from a book. Not everyone is lucky enough to live close to a wine region that grows many different grapes from around the wine world, and does so many of them so well. BC's diversity is its strength, so this series will help you learn about wine the best way we know how: by tasting.
Everyone loves Gamay, or they should if they enjoy Pinot Noir. Maybe you've only ever had Beaujolais Nouveau, so you think that it's not really for you with its banana and bubblegum notes. It turns out these flavours are a result of its production method and not all Gamay is made like that, especially in BC.
Light, medium or full-bodied, Gamay offers more robust flavours than its cousin Pinot Noir, and can be delicious served a bit chilled. Taste these and discover how you prefer to drink yours!
Garden of Granite 2019 Gamay Golden Mile Bench
Golden Mile bench fruit. The cousin of the heartbreak grape that is much more forgiving. This garagiste Beaujolais inspired Gamay is light bodied and tickles the palate with its vibrant, unadultured youth. Notes of young barely ripe cherries, fig and soft fresh mint. Chill this wine down and guzzle it back.
Volcanic Hills Winery 2019 Gamay West Kelowna
Ruby red in colour with aromas and flavours of cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry, cherry, hints of soft fennel and cinnamon, rounded out with an earthy finish. Light-bodied, this wine has spent 4 months in French and American oak, and shows soft tannins with juicy acidity.
Robin Ridge Winery 2019 Gamay Similkameen Valley
From the Similkameen Valley comes this take on Gamay noir that is bright, fresh, light and juicy with ripe raspberry, strawberry and blueberry with violet, white pepper and cinnamon on the long finish.
Three Sisters Winery 2018 Gamay Naramata Bench
This Gamay is a medium bodied red wine with a bouquet of violets and rose petals. The palate is round with ripe cherry and red plum flavours, balanced together with natural acidity. If pairing with food, our suggestions are pork tenderloin with Moroccan dry rub or a fresh Nicoise salad.
Haywire Wines 2018 Gamay Oliver
Sourced from the organic Secrest Mountain Vineyard in Oliver, this gamay was partially whole cluster fermented before being aged for eight months in concrete. It combines juicy black fruits with gamay’s spicy, savoury side.
Pentage Winery 2018 Gamay Skaha Bench
Pentage is a boutique winery with 35-acres overlooking Skaha Lake.
In the glass it offers spiced cherries and red plums, a hint of pepper and cocoa, tealeaf and cedar with a hint of bacon fat. Tangy red berries and fine spice dominate the palate. It is juicy and charming but still delivers structure.
